First Time to the Marathon Start Line: Our Top Kit Picks

First Time to the Marathon Start Line: Our Top Kit Picks

There’s no doubt that when you’re heading to the start line of your first marathon, there will be a huge wave of emotions to contend with – excitement, nerves, anticipation, and so many more!

But, one feeling that is essential for finishing those all-important 26.2 miles, is comfort. 26.2 miles is a long way to go, so you want to maximise your comfort where you can: which is why footwear, clothing, and marathon kit is so important.

To help you out, we’ve highlighted some key marathon equipment we think you need, along with some of our top picks in each category. Keep reading to find out more.

How to choose the best marathon running shoes

When it comes to lacing up for your marathon, comfort is key. That’s why deciding on the best marathon running shoes is something you should do in the weeks preceding the actual race day. To make sure you pick the best marathon trainers for you, we recommend:

  • Getting an in-person gait analysis: a gait analysis is something that you should arguably do as part of your training, to get the right shoes to build your stamina. But, in the time before race day, getting a gait analysis can help you find the right support and shoe for your running style.

Top Tip: find your local Up & Running Store to get a gait analysis from one of our expert team members.

  • Buying from a specialist running shoe store: alongside the potential to get a gait analysis, getting your marathon shoes from a specialist running shop helps make sure you can ask any questions that you need to before the big day.

  • Remember to size up: your feet swell when they get hot, so the best marathon running shoes tend to be at least one size up from your regular shoe size.

  • Leave time to break them in: NEVER start race day with brand-new shoes. Always order your marathon running shoes at least 4-6 weeks before the actual day so you have time to get used to them and break them in. Remember, comfort is key.

  • Comfort over style: while it can be fun to have matching running gear for the *aesthetic*, it’s really not worth it if they aren’t comfortable. Look for key factors like support, cushioning, breathability, and shaping first. If they look good, that’s a bonus.

  • Don’t forget your socks: running socks are usually designed with extra support and durability in key areas. Make sure you pick a pair that are comfortable, and take them with you when you’re buying any marathon running shoes as they will impact the fit.

Choose your marathon outfit wisely

Leggings, shorts, t-shirt or vest... choosing what to wear for a marathon can be difficult. The best way to find what works for you is to experiment with different kits in your training runs so you find the perfect kit for a distraction-free race. But what do you need to remember?

  • Running trousers: look for something breathable, flexible, and comfortable. You want to be able to move easily, stay warm enough without overheating, and avoid chafing as much as possible. When it comes to loose fit or tight fit, this is partially down to preference – but also the length of your runs. For more casual training, a looser fit might be more comfortable, whereas you might prefer something more form-fitting for longer races to keep everything in place.

  • Running tops: again, the best running tops for your marathon are breathable, flexible, and comfortable. Lightweight tops are useful for longer races, because there is less weight for you to carry. To minimise irritation or potential chafing, look for tops with fewer, or no, seams.

  • Running socks: opt for a pair of marathon running socks that keeps the blisters at bay and feeling fresh all day. We suggest a pair that has extra padding on key pressure points like the heel and toe to help keep you forging ahead for longer. Remember, no matter the pace you run, you’re bound to get a little warm at the feet. So pick running socks that have channelled air cushioning, or upper ventilation, so that makes each step feel oh-so breezy.

Tips for choosing your marathon outfit

Still a bit stuck? Don’t forget to consider the following…

  • The weather: dress for the weather on the day. For warmer weather, choose something light. If it’s raining, make sure you have enough cover to protect you without overheating during the race.

  • The fit: try out your full raceday outfit a couple of times before the day to check how it fits. This can help you identify any niggles like tags or errant seams that could affect you on the day.

  • The support: make sure your outfit offers you the support you need. Compression wear and/or properly fitting sports bras are key to help you feel comfortable while you run.

Extra marathon kit

Shoes? Check. Outfit? Check. What else could you need?

Well, there are some extra pieces of marathon kit you might want to invest in to help you complete those long 26.2 miles. These include:

  • Running vest: even on your marathon, you want to keep the essentials close. Phone, keys, chafe cream, hydration and energy snacks can all be kept in your running vest, without the shift and movement of a backpack that could otherwise throw off your stride.

  • Cap and/or sun glasses: protect your face and eyes in hotter or summer weather with some comfortable running sun glasses and a hat.

  • Water: while marathons tend to have plenty of hydration stations, if it makes you more comfortable, you can bring a hydration source with you.

  • Energy gels: running for that long, you’re going to want something to keep your energy up. Energy gels are a great source of quick energy that won’t sit too heavy on your digestion – perfect for a mid-race boost.

  • Smart watch: being able to track time, your pace, and tempo are important. A high-quality smart watch keeps all of this data and more right at hand for every step of the race.

  • Headphones: whether you prefer running to music, sneaking in a podcast, or need an audiobook to get you through the quieter miles, a good pair of headphones is essential. The best marathon headphones are comfortable, effective, and will stay in place while you move.

Top Tip: check the race rules before you bring some equipment as they can vary from event to event.
